History of Camp Cottonwood
Lake County's Most Iconic Camping Area
The camp has been a source of joy for Lake County residents and their friends since 1949. In that year, Camp Cottonwood Inc., a non-profit organization, was formed to operate the camp for the benefit of the young people in Lake County.
Camp Cottonwood sits on the shore of Cottonwood Meadow Lake, which is nestled between the crests of Cougar and Grizzly peaks, six miles off the Klamath Falls-Lakeview Highway (Oregon Hwy 140).
Over the years, the use of tents and open camping has been replaced, through the construction efforts of volunteers, with a kitchen, dining hall, sleeping cabins, a water system, and finally, indoor toilets and showers.
Patronage is still largely youth and church organizations, although family, and education and civic groups are welcome.
Camp Cottonwood resides fully on U.S. Forest Service land, and is operated under a permit with Fremont-Winema National Forest. (The U.S.D.A. Forest Service is an equal opportunity employer.)
